Are you on the fence about purchasing a motorcycle? There’s a good reason to get one, and that’s for the adventure. Are you adventurous? If so, you’re going to love cruising down the highway on a bike because nothing separates you from the open road, and with the wind against your skin, you get to your destination faster and in style. Although not immune from danger, motorcycles are relatively safe. Before buying your motorcycle, here’s some things you should keep in mind:

What You Need Before You Buy

It’s illegal to drive an uninsured vehicle, but that’s not the best reason to insure your bike. The best reason – the reason you need insurance – is that accidents can occur. Motorcycle insurance protects you from liability, and can mean the difference between paying out of pocket for repairs and injuries and having those financial obligations covered. There are two ways to insure your bike:

Honda
  • Basic motorcycle liability coverage – This is bare minimum insurance. Basically, it covers other people if you’re at fault in an accident. It doesn’t cover you.
  • Motorcycle comprehensive and collision – This protection can be built up however you want. It can include additional protections, including theft, fire, vandalism, etc. It also protects you in the event an accident occurs, as well as it protects others.

The Financial Benefits of Owning a Motorcycle

Motorcycles are typically cheaper to purchase and maintain than cars and trucks. And, the gas is significantly less expensive. Even a high performance motorcycle consumes very little gas; perhaps, on par with a small fuel efficient car. Because they have small capacity engines, the taxes are less for a motorcycle than they are for other vehicles. Insurance is often cheaper as well, so you can opt for more coverage, which buys you a little piece of mind too.

The Perks and Fun Stuff

With a motorcycle, you can zigzag through traffic; although, be careful to pass legally because a cop can still pull you over if you fail to obey the rules of traffic. You’ll get to your destination faster, and once there you’ll have an easier time parking. Motorcycles are far easier to park than cars and trucks, which means more time having fun and less time being frustrated.

The best thing about a motorcycle is its swagger; it’s sexy. Motorcycles can and will bring out your adventurous side, which will empower you with style, self-esteem, and confidence. They’re a great way to start a conversation, and may facilitate new friendships. (Bikers through some crazy and awesome parties!)

If you’re not looking to forge new friendships, consider this: motorcycle road trips are the absolute best road trips. Many believe that motorcycle road trips enhance a relationship with nature. While you drive, you enjoy your surroundings; you’re more connected than ever. Actor Hugh Laurie wasn’t lying when he said this about riding his motorcycle:

“Driving a motorcycle is like flying. All your senses are alive. When I ride through Beverly Hills in the early morning, and all the sprinklers have turned off, the scents that wash over me are just heavenly…”

The Gear You’ll Need

A motorcycle is a great purchase, just remember to be safe out there. In terms of gear, you’ll need a full-face coverage helmet, a tough material (perhaps leather) jacket, boots, gloves, and some people wear chaps.

It’s also essential that your motorcycle be in good shape. Ask a third party motorcycle enthusiast (someone who is knowledgeable) to inspect your bike before making a purchase. This is going to ensure you’re not sold a lemon your first time buying. If he gives you the thumbs up to buy it, congratulations, you just made a purchase you will not regret.
