39 Monte Carlo – Monaco’s Exclusive Members-Only Address

You might think that a private members club in Monaco is a paradox. From the outside, the glamorous Principality appears as one giant members-only venue – Monaco real estate is some of the most expensive in the world and the fabulously wealthy, famous and glamorous are permanently in residence in this coastal Mediterranean enclave. But, adding a layer of exclusivity onto what was already one of the world’s most exclusive destinations was a giant masterstroke orchestrated by ex-Scotland rugby player Ross Beattie. In less than two years, 39 Monte Carlo (39), the private sports and lifestyle club he founded in 2016, has become the home away from home for the who’s who of pro-athletes and local fitness enthusiasts.

Life Begins at 39

Blessed with an exceptional location along the Larvotto seaside promenade Avenue Princesse Grace, 39 is a destination in its own right where fitness, wellness and nutrition reign. Unsurprisingly, the enormous sports floor is the focal point and is equipped with the latest and most sophisticated fitness facilities and gym equipment in Monaco, including an altitude chamber that simulates up to 5000m above sea level. Post-workout, members can tuck into a nutritious meal in 39’s upscale restaurant, conduct business in the members lounge, private study or on the sunny terrace, or enjoy a beauty treatment or have their hair styled in Studio 39. It really delivers on its promise to be a home away from home for members.

The project took four years to complete and the club finally opened its sophisticated doors in October 2016. “Discretion and exclusivity are at our core,” explains Christophe Bors, 39’s General Manager. “We wanted to create a gym and club that could be a base for the many pro-athletes that call Monaco home but also for people who are looking for a place, where they can combine fitness, relaxation, business and social life.”

Best Gym in the World

Until last summer, 39 Monte Carlo was flying somewhat under the radar – and happily so. But that all changed when Swedish (and ex-Manchester United) footballer Zlatan Ibrahimović walked through the doors. “After a month of training here, he posted a workout session on Instagram,” says Christophe. The next day, 39 was splashed all over the world’s TVs and newspapers. A defining moment in the club’s young history, “we became known as the wellness centre for pro-athletes,” he says.

A destination where pure luxury meets professional fitness, there is nothing in Monaco quite like 39 – nor the world. “Most pro-athletes are saying we are now the best gym in the world,” says Christophe. A partnership with ATP has opened 39’s doors to the top men’s tennis players, while Team Sky cyclists, Formula One drivers and the Monaco women’s basketball team can also be seen working out or enjoying a meal off the custom-designed pro athletes menu. Given the high-profile membership, it’s not a surprise that 39 has a strictly monitored social media policy and Christophe explains that the power of the club lies in its discretion. “All the members have the same mentality and a mutual respect. We are here to take care of everybody, it is not a place to be on show. We are like one big family so everyone has to feel at home.”

Next Stop: The World

Now firmly established as one of Monaco’s most exclusive destinations, brand 39 Monte Carlo has global cities such as London, Dubai and Hong Kong firmly in its sights, as well as 39 branded music, menus and training programs.

Membership Plans

Close to its membership capacity, there are a few options for those wishing to become part of the 39 family to consider. An annual membership is valued at €4,900, while an annual couple membership is priced at €7,900. Those under 27 can benefit from a reduced annual membership fee of €2700.

But you don’t have to live in Monaco to take advantage of everything 39 Monte Carlo has on offer. A fee of €2,500 buys you 30 days to use across the year, perfect for those who visit Monaco on a regular basis but don’t call it home.

39 also has a growing reputation for its monthly events and innovative yet nutritious menus and for those who prefer a less strenuous entry to the club can apply for a social membership, priced at €1,200 single/€1,900 couple.
