Jake Gyllenhaal Leads M. Night Shyamalan’s New Mystery Remain

The upcoming Warner Bros. thriller brings together M. Night Shyamalan and bestselling romance author Nicholas Sparks for an unexpected creative collaboration.

M. Night Shyamalan is heading back to theatres with Remain, a new mystery thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal — and this time, he’s teaming up with a creative partner few would have predicted: Nicholas Sparks.

Warner Bros. Pictures describes the film as a collaboration between Shyamalan and the bestselling author behind The NotebookA Walk to Remember and Dear John, combining their distinctly different storytelling sensibilities for an original story.

Gyllenhaal stars as Tate Gordon, a reclusive architect who relocates to a small coastal town to complete his latest project. There, he meets an alluring young woman who begins drawing him out of his isolation. Their connection soon leads him into something considerably darker, however, as Tate finds himself caught in the middle of a deadly mystery hanging over the town.

Phoebe Dynevor joins Gyllenhaal in the film, alongside Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty and Jay O. Sanders.

Shyamalan directs Remain from his own screenplay, based on a story developed with Sparks. He also produces the film alongside Ashwin Rajan, Marc Bienstock and Theresa Park, while Sparks serves as executive producer.

The pairing is an intriguing one. Sparks has built his career around sweeping romances and emotionally driven relationships, while Shyamalan has become synonymous with psychological tension, unsettling mysteries and stories that rarely unfold exactly as expected. Remain appears poised to bring elements of both worlds together, with its central romance unfolding against the backdrop of something much more sinister.

Behind the camera, Shyamalan has assembled a team that includes cinematographer Adolpho Veloso, production designer Sam Lisenco, editor Noëmi Preiswerk and costume designer Caroline Duncan. James Newton Howard will compose the score, continuing his long creative history with Shyamalan.
