Contemporary Classics – Eero Aarnio Ball Chair

Every now and then a furniture designer comes along who is a bit of a game changer and who
boasts the capabilities to think outside of the box and shake up the industry. Eero Aarnio is definitely
a name that falls into this category and his most iconic piece was unquestionably that of the Ball
Chair pictured above.

Eero Aarnio was a Finnish designer who was born in Helsinki in 1932 and he originally designed and
released the piece of furniture for which he was most famed, the Ball Chair, over 40 years ago in
1966 and it is clear that he was a designer well ahead of his time with pieces as unconventional and
striking as this. The Ball Chair formed the cornerstone of the Eero Aarnio collection of furniture and
served as one of the principal catalysts for the modernist movement in furniture design.

Along with his contemporaries at the time, such as Charles Eames and Hans Wegner, Eero Aarnio
completely changed the face of furniture design and breathed fresh life into what was a stagnating
industry. The Eero Aarnio Ball Chair is exactly the sort of statement furniture which today’s interior
designers recommend for contemporary properties and it will ramp up the style and visual appeal of
any type of property.
