Melbourne on Your Own Schedule: Why Car Share Fits the Way the City Lives Now

Melbourne rewards spontaneity.

A last minute dinner booking in Brunswick, a Sunday drive down the Mornington Peninsula, a gallery opening across the river. The city’s best moments don’t always line up with a tram timetable. That’s part of why car share Melbourne options have become a quiet fixture of inner city life. Toyota’s KINTO program is one of the names parked on the street when you need it.

A car that lives in your phone

KINTO is Toyota’s car rental and car share service in Australia, run by Toyota Finance Australia Limited. The idea is simple. Download the app, sign up for free, get approved, and you can book a Toyota for as little as an hour.

There is no counter to visit and no key to collect. The app finds the car, books it, unlocks it and locks it again when you’re done. For anyone who likes their errands handled with minimal fuss, that matters.

Built for city rhythms

KINTO Share is the hourly and same-day option. Those are the trips that make up most of city life: the furniture pickup, the airport drop for a friend, the run out to a weekend market.

Melbourne was where KINTO began. Its first vehicles were placed in the CBD and Carlton. The network has since spread to suburbs including South Yarra, St Kilda, Port Melbourne, South Melbourne, Brighton, Preston and Glen Waverley, and further out to Frankston, Mornington and Pakenham.

Cars sit in three kinds of spots:

  • on the street in the CBD and suburbs,
  • in off street car parks and selected hotels, and
  • at participating Toyota dealerships.

Most can be collected and returned at any hour of the day.

The details that count

Every booking includes fuel, insurance (an excess applies) and 24/7 roadside assistance. There’s no membership fee, and cancellation is free up to two hours before your booking starts. Pricing is split into a time charge and a distance charge, both shown before you confirm.

At the time of writing, a Yaris Hybrid started from $9.75 an hour plus 27 cents per kilometre. Cars are returned to the same spot they were collected from, so plan your trip as a round trip.

Choose the car for the occasion

The fleet is all Toyota and no more than three years old, which means current hybrids rather than tired runabouts.

  • Dinner across town: a Corolla Hybrid.
  • A weekend away with friends: the RAV4 Hybrid or the seven seat Kluger Hybrid.
  • Going electric: the all electric bZ4X, with a range of up to 535 kilometres.
  • Moving house: the HiAce Cargo van, with 6.2 cubic metres of load space.

Not instead of your car, alongside it

The smartest way to think about car share is as an extension of what you already have. It’s the second car for the afternoon your partner has the first. It’s the bigger car when the family visits, or the van you’d never want to own.

For anyone weighing up car share Melbourne services, KINTO offers the reassurance of a familiar badge with a booking process that lives entirely on your phone.

The KINTO app is free on the App Store and Google Play. Locations and pricing are at kinto.com.au, or call 1300 4KINTO (1300 454 686).
