With (literal) blood on her hands, Claire Underwood sits aloft a presidential marble throne in a position that harkens viewers back to our most powerful American forefathers in the promotional image for the upcoming season of “House of Cards.” While we do not yet know whose blood Robin Wright’s character wears, we are certainly pleased we will get to find out. Amid recent controversy, Netflix let go of Kevin Spacey, the show’s main protagonist since 2013, and fans were unsure whether the series would continue without him. Fortunately, Netflix recently announced an air date for the sixth and final season of “House of Cards”: November 2, 2018.

Since 2013, “House of Cards” has topped the charts as one of Netflix’s most popular original series. Not just another political, White House drama, the cerebral and intriguing series “House of Cards” has received critical acclaim from its beginnings. The first in its genre to receive multiple Primetime Emmy Award nominations, the series won seven of fifty-three nominations. Additionally, “House of Cards” received multiple Golden Globe nominations and wins, multiple Screen Actors Guild nominations and wins, an AFI award, Writers Guild Award nominations (and one win), BAFTA nominations, Producers Guild Award nominations, Directors Guild Award nominations, and a Peabody Award. This series is a rare gem in its demonstrated ability to gain favor with the critics as well as the masses.

“House of Cards” appeals to lovers of political drama in search of an inside look at the corruption and underhanded goings on within the White House. Though the series is fictional, its plot alludes to real-life political drama and figures. Viewers get a first-hand look into the dysfunctional and corrupt processes through which the Senate and the House make decisions and the ways in which higher-ups will do just about anything to stay in power. Murder, bribery, extramarital affairs, and professional misconduct are among the turmoil that fuels this political drama.

Although Frank Underwood (played by actor Kevin Spacey), was the center of most of the drama throughout the first five seasons of the series, Season Five ended with his resignation from his position as President of the United States. Promotions for Season Six make it clear that a new protagonist will emerge in the form of Claire Underwood. Claire has proven that she is willing to do anything to get what she wants, and we cannot wait to see what she has in store for the presidency.

In this last and final season of “House of Cards,” it is Claire’s turn to finally step out of her husband’s shadow and enact her own political agenda. We already know she has the ambition and the intelligence to run the show, and with Frank out of the way, only time will tell what Claire will do with her newfound power.
