Just in time for spooky season, one of Colleen Hoover’s most talked-about novels is heading to the big screen.
Verity arrives in theatres October 2, bringing the bestselling psychological thriller to life with Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett at the centre of its increasingly twisted story.
Directed by Michael Showalter, the film follows struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson), who is given an opportunity that could change her career when she is brought to the remote Crawford estate to ghostwrite for celebrated author Verity Crawford (Hathaway).
But what initially looks like a professional assignment quickly becomes something far more unsettling.
While working at the estate, Lowen discovers what appears to be a collection of autobiographical notes written by Verity. Inside are disturbing confessions that cast Verity, her marriage to Jeremy and the Crawford family’s past in an entirely different light.
As attraction, suspicion and manipulation begin to overlap, Lowen is left questioning how much of what she has discovered is actually true — and how much she can trust the people around her.
For readers familiar with Hoover’s novel, that uncertainty is a major part of what made Verity stand apart from her more romance-driven work. The story trades straightforward answers for shifting perspectives, uncomfortable questions and a constant tension between what is written, what is believed and what really happened.
Alongside Hathaway, Johnson and Hartnett, the cast includes Ismael Cruz Cordova and Brady Wagner.
The adaptation gives October moviegoers something a little different from the traditional horror lineup. Rather than ghosts or masked killers, Verity leans into obsession, desire, secrets and psychological manipulation — the kind of story where figuring out who to believe becomes part of the experience.
And if you haven’t read the book yet, this might be one adaptation where going in knowing as little as possible is part of the fun.
