Rei Kawakubo and the MET Gala 2017 Infusion with ‘the Real World’

The Met Gala has always been the most anticipated international event of the year for the fashion and entertainment industry that happens annually on the 1st of May at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts. Despite the event may seem like any other red carpet award ceremonies or celebrity-studded soiree, it is actually the one night of the year where international celebrities, socialites, and design houses are able to actually collaborate with each other and create a one-of-a-kind outfit that cohesively display the design label’s long-standing aesthetic and their interpretation of the theme of this year’s Gala, also effectively provide a figure-flattering garment.

This year’s theme is an homage to the still-living Rei Kawakubo, founder of Comme des Garcons, one of the most influential designers of the past decades. Most of us living in a commercial world would usually associate the brand with their highly priced luxury basic collection of t-shirts, polos, sweaters, and shoes with a cartoonish heart logo. So how come this label is receiving the most prestigious award in the industry; having its own exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum. Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons has been a visionary artist throughout the decades, known for her avant-garde designs that are really out of this world or “unwearable installations,” as the garments are most often highly-outrageous.

\With that introduction, it is a must see exhibit despite not really able to understand the garments. The exhibition space itself will be an interesting experience, especially when there will not be detail descriptions of the garment, which according to Kawakubo “she doesn’t want there to be a definitive interpretation of her clothes.”
