When you need to take care of many things in your home, it can feel daunting. That’s why it’s easy to procrastinate. But, of course, it’s always better to address home maintenance issues as soon as possible. Keep in mind, this is not just about fixing broken things, it is also about protecting the health and safety of your household.

Three common issues that come up in conversations about home maintenance are pest control, security and home repair, so let’s take a look at those.

1. Pest Control

Pests can damage your property and spread diseases. Since they can be a major issue for homeowners, it is best to hire professionals to do the work of getting rid of them. The simplest way to find the right pest control experts for your budget is to do a search online for an “exterminator near me.” A reputable company will detect hidden areas of infestation and completely resolve your pest problems.

2. Home Security

The security of your home is something else you should address. Despite many excellent home systems available, you will need to carefully research your best options and then either install them yourself or hire a handyman to do the job.

A better solution, however, might be to hire a reputable home security company. Homeowners who install their own security devices often discover that their measures are ineffective, finding out with dismay how much they underestimated the cunning of a seasoned burglar. Most ad hoc solutions purchased after reading an ad for burglar alarms, locks, or cameras are easy to bypass.

Professional home security companies offer a variety of solutions for a reasonable monthly fee. They have the knowledge, skill, experience, and resources to protect your family and your property from anything that could happen. One common security measure they use is remote surveillance. It is a perfect solution for those who live in rural areas because it provides an extra set of eyes and ears on your property. Additionally, the sight of a professional security system in various places outside and inside the house, such as a 4- or 8-camera home security system, or even just a sticker on windows and doors with a security company logo is enough to make most burglars decide against breaking in.

3. Home Repair

Perhaps you have a lot of things that need to be repaired, ranging from broken garbage disposal units to doors that don’t close properly. Sometimes these issues aren’t urgent. However, some issues need to be addressed as soon as possible, such as repairing your basement because flooding is a leading cause of basement water damage in the United States.

Basement floors are often subject to water infiltration because of insufficient waterproofing or improper grading around the house. Rain or flood water that enters the home through the foundation walls or floor drains can cause considerable water damage—but, this issue can sometimes be avoided altogether by installing a drainage system, such as a drain tile driven by a sump pump.

Create a List of Priorities

If you need to hire a handyperson, but have a limited budget or plan to do the repairs yourself but don’t have enough time, your best option is to create a list of priorities and work on them in phases.

Maintain your list of all the tasks that you need to get done and allocate one day each month for working on one of these tasks, either by hiring someone or doing it yourself. It’s also advisable to have a checklist that you can tick off each task as it gets completed rather than trying to keep track of your progress mentally. In addition to less confusion, seeing items physically checked off can help keep you motivated and give you a sense of accomplishment. So let’s get started on that list…
