For many attendees or watchers of horse racing, the thrill of the sport is betting who will win or lose on the day. But for amateur bettors or those who are new to the sport, it can be difficult to know who is the best option to back on the day in order to increase your chances of making a profit. With a new horse racing calendar beginning and many horse racing events coming up in 2019, for example check out these tips for Cheltenham festival. It’s time to do your research and work out who you’re going to back when you place your bets. These are five of the best tips for the world of horse racing this year for the top picks of horses to back when you head to the bookies.

Champ

After winning his debut at Newbury, Nicky Henderson’s Champ is expected to build on his success in 2019 to become a graded performer. Although he’s still new to the sport and learning the game, the seven-year-old has certainly impressed so far on testing ground and could be a great contender over the course of this year.

Lalor

Kayley Woollacott’s novice seven-year-old hurdler had an incredibly impressive start back in November at Cheltenham, just failing to handle very bad ground, but he’s currently got odds of 9/2 for Cheltenham Festival in March and is an appealing pick at this stage. The horse looks to be every bit as great with fences as it was hoped he would be and he’s a top contender for the Arkle Trophy.

Santini

Santini is a progressive novice hurdler to look out for who, despite making a major error back in November at Newbury, won his seasonal debut and is currently held in high regard. He’s taken really well to fences and is expected to suit a more galloping track. If you’re looking to place a bet at Aintree in the spring, Santini could be a great contender to back as it’s thought that the flat track will suit his jumping run style.

Too Darn Hot

Too Darn Hot is John Gosden’s unbeaten colt who completed a brilliant four-timer in October when he landed the Group 1 Dewhurst at Newmarket, but he still has scope to improve further. Owned by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the two-year-old Thoroughbred is being aimed at the Epsom Derby in June and this should be a good test of his stamina as he develops and becomes more accustomed to the game.

Vintage Clouds

Vintage Clouds is a tip for the Grand National in April – Sue Smith’s nine-year-old consistent stayer is currently placed at a 25/1 chance to win so he could be worth keeping a lookout for at Aintree. He’s made winning appearances at Aintree before and won a six-runner event at Haydock previously by half a length from Takingrisks. Vintage Clouds has been proven to revel in testing ground with fantastic extended stamina, so the challenge of the Grand National could be the perfect event for him.
