It is an undisputed fact that Europe is one of the most romantic places in the world for couples to visit. Packing your bags and exploring the gorgeous cities, charming hilltop villages, stunning coastlines, and extraordinary culture that Europe is full of makes for a truly wonderful romantic getaway.

Couples love traveling through Europe together, but when it comes to genuine romance, Greece and Italy stand out as the top two destinations in the Old World to visit. Choosing between these top two, however, is a hard task.

So what to do if you want the best, most romantic vacation in Europe? How to choose between Greece and Italy for your loved-up getaway? Here are a few things to think about when confronted with this difficult dilemma.

Most romantic spots in Italy

Venice

‘The Floating City’ offers romance and magic around every corner. Whether you are being serenaded by your gondolier as you drift along the canals or looking out over the lagoon from the balcony of your palazzo, Venice never disappoints when it comes to romance. The city is such a magical place that really all you need to do for a unique, special experience is wander the narrow, twisting streets. You will inevitably chance upon some charming piazza or picturesque bridge that will make your day.

Honda

Amalfi

The Amalfi Coast is a favorite destination for lovers. Gorgeous cliff top villages perch precariously over secret bays, set against the stunning, sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea. Towns like Ravello, Positano, and Amalfi itself are an explosion of color, charm, and history, with dramatic Moorish architecture set against lush lemon groves. You can even take a trip across the sea to Capri, the island retreat of Roman emperors.

Verona

It would be hard to find a more romantic spot than the setting for Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet! Fair Verona is full of romance, and not just due to its literary connections. Juliet’s balcony is, of course, a popular spot to visit, but everything in this delightful city is a treat for couples, from the ancient Roman city center and glittering River Adige, to the glorious panoramas on show from the grounds of Castel San Pietro.

Most romantic spots in Greece

Santorini

Santorini is one of the most visually arresting spots on the planet, and an incredible place for a couples getaway. The whitewashed villages spilling down the cliffs contrast incredibly with the turquoise water of the Mediterranean to create a remarkable sight that only gets better at sunset!

Athens

This ancient city is a wonderful spot for lovers. One of the most culture-rich cities on Planet Earth, you will love exploring museum after museum and gallery after gallery with your loved one, and feasting your eyes on the ancient wonder that is the Acropolis.

Crete

When it comes to romantic getaways, Crete has it all. If you are an adventurous couple, you’ll love the rugged, mountainous scenery that is made for exploration. If you prefer a more luxurious experience, Crete is full of exquisite beaches and tiny little secret bays and coves to explore together. Combined with its truly remarkable Minoan history, this makes Crete a really special place to explore.

But why choose?

Of course, the easiest (and best) option is not to choose at all! Take a cruise from Italy to Greece and enjoy the best of both worlds. These two destinations offer some of the most romantic destinations and experiences in the world, and by combining them into one amazing couples vacation you are guaranteed a dream trip, full of romance and relaxation.
