A Review Of Moonpod, the Modular Bean Bag for Stress Relief

The Moon Pod attracted a lot of attention from its successful Kickstarter campaign that raised $1.2 million dollars in 2018 and is now available for purchase online. Recently, I had the opportunity to test out and review this popular bean bag to see if the product justifies its substantial $300 price tag. In this review, I will discuss and dissect the Moon Pod’s comfort, function, and form in relation to what the company says about this product. Read on if you want to learn more about my thoughts on the Moon Pod bean bag chair.

But How does it Feel?

The furniture industry loves throwing out the word “ergonomic” to describe its products. At this point, it’s pretty overused. I find that nowadays, it is much more difficult for consumers to differentiate what is actually ergonomic, i.e designed for ease of use and human comfort, versus a product that looks well-designed but doesn’t actually have the user’s comfort and convenience at the top of its mind. Moon Pod is another product that claims to have some pretty good ergonomics. Let’s see how it stacks up to its claim.

The Moon Pod looks similar to a normal bean bag, perhaps a little longer than the spherical brethren. However, it feels a lot different once you sit on it. The Moon Pod gives the impression of floating on something rather than getting absorbed into a blob, which is how I would describe my personal experience with a normal bean bag. The bean bag is denser than what you would expect, giving it some good support when you’re sitting on it for a long period of time. Despite its density, it is still malleable to the user’s sitting position and body. The Pod doesn’t sacrifice the defining characteristic of a bean bag, its amorphous and shapable form, for some more density and support. Instead, it combines these qualities together to create what I would call an ergonomic chair.

My experience with the Moon Pod was very relaxing, to say the least. It’s great to sit or lay on after coming home and scroll on your phone for a bit. A lot of Moon Pod’s marketing material says that it can help with stress and generally calm people down. I think it’s always a bit risky when products claim to have health benefits. It’s hard to prove and a lot to claim. Does the Moon Pod relieve stress and anxiety? Maybe. Is it comfortable? Yes. Does being comfortable cause you to relieve stress? That’s up to you, but I could say that it does for me. Overall, I don’t know if I would call it a stress-alleviating bean bag, but I can see where the company is coming from.

Moon Pod Aesthetics

The Moon Pod comes in a nice “Space Gray” color and is generally quite simple in design. Some people might prefer a neutral design because it doesn’t clash with their living space, but I would have preferred some more color options or a little bit more consideration into its aesthetic if I’m paying $300 for it. It is a little plain, but then again, some people like that.

What I do like about the Moon Pod is that I can tell it was designed with convenience in mind. It’s light enough to move around without much difficulty and the fabric shell is removable and machine washable for easy cleaning. Just a few nice features to make the user experience a little bit better.

I don’t think the Moon Pod is an amazing, life-changing product but it is a purchase I am happy with. After using it almost every day for a few weeks, it became my preferred sitting surface at home. It’s simple, easy-to-use and convenient. But considering that it costs $300, I don’t know if it is completely worth its value. Stress-relieving or not, at the end of the day, it’s just a bean bag.
